Romanian PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu said Monday that state authorities would launch checks at bread producers to limit the “huge fiscal evasion” affecting the sector. He said during a visit to a bread factory that statistical data announced officially regarding the production and sales of bread are about five times smaller than the real ones.

Thus, while official figures show Romanians each eat 24 kilos of bread annally, they in fact eat 115-120 kilos each.

“Romania is known as a country where people eat a lot of bread. However, we have a smaller official average than Germany, which has 80 kilos of bread per capita annually”, he said.

The intervention comes as bread producers have been the target of media criticism over his fiscal performance after it came to light that a price boost for bread products should be expected in Romania.

Tariceanu stopped short of speaking of how proper a boost in bread prices would be considering the drought currently affecting the country.
