A red code of extremely high temperatures will be applied for five counties in southern Romania on Tuesday, Health minister Eugen Nicolaescu announced on Monday.

The red alert was set to be applied in the counties of Giurgiu, Ilfov - including capital city Bucharest, Teleorman, Olt and Dolj. According to Nicolaescu, the red alert and probably the orange (intermediate extreme weather code) alert set for counties in SW Romania may be lifted on Wednesday.

Nicolaescu recommended universities where admission exams are scheduled for Tuesday not to organize such exams between 11 a.m. and 18 p.m.

Public institutions will also shorten up their opening hours to 7:30-11 a.m. and 6-8 p.m..

As far as traffic is concerned, restrictions for vehicles of over 7.5 tons will be maintained for national roads and extended to county roads during day time. The restrictions will not apply to vehicles carrying water and food as donations for disaster-stricken areas.
