The Turkish Prime Minister’s party, The Party for Justice and Development won the legislative elections with 47,6% of the cast votes this weekend, according to the partial results announced late in the day, AFP informs.

Over 42 million Turks were expected to elect a new parliament in an important time for the country’s future. Out of two options, the secular political forces sustained by the army and the ruling moderate Islamic party, the latter was by far the favorite. The winning party obtained 334 seats out of 550 in the Parliament.

The main opposition party, the People’s Republican Party won 20,2% of the votes.

PM Erdogan was forced to convoke elections since the Parliament failed to elect a new president in May this year.
