Ukrainian ambassador in Bucharest Yuri Malko informed the Romanian Environment minister that authorities in Kiev decided to cease the works on the Bistroe canal until a firm and full environment impact study is conducted.

Malko also claims that all the works made so far were simply maintenance procedures.

According to a press release issued by the Environment Ministry, Malko "firmly" declared that the second stage of the Ukrainian project - the deepening of the canal in order to allow the Danube - Black Sea navigation on Ukrainian territory - was not started.

Malko declared that the impact study will be conducted according to the interior legislation and the international conventions, mainly the ESPOO convention, which includes both Romania and Ukraine.
