The leadership of an influential faction of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in Cluj, Transylvania threatened to resign en-masse on Sunday but eventually stopped short from complying with the threat after a top PSD leader in Bucharest called for two top members of the party to be ousted.

The break-up was postponed until the central party leadership makes a decision regarding the call by Marian Vanghelie that Cluj-based member Vasile Dancu and young PSD representative Victor Ponta be dismissed, Dancu said later on Sunday.

The Cluj branch, seen as one of the most influential groupings within the PSD, also complained that party president Mircea Geoana failed to produce a reaction to Vanghelie’s call, which they call scandalous.

A possible final decision to resign en-masse - which would include Cluj branch leader Ioan Rus - is expected to be discussed at a national PSD meeting on Monday and might be made once a reunion of leaders of PSD local branches takes place later this month.

Vanghelie has called for the resignation of Ponta and Dancu because of public stands taken by the two repeatedly against the official line of the party.
