" Bulgaria and Romania are expected to escape European Union sanctions this month in spite of their failure to crack down on corruption and organized crime since joining the club in January", an article in the electronic edition of Financial Times reads on Wednesday.

Although no final decisions have been taken, several well-placed Brussels officials say Bulgaria and Romania will be told to speed up reforms but sanctions will be kept in reserve.

The author also notes that Barroso is expected to announce that both countries made some progress, but both failed to put an end to corruption.

A "robust" report on the progress Romania and Bulgaria made is expected at the end of June.
