Romanian ex-football player Gica Craioveanu was elected city councilor in the city of Getafe following the Sunday local elections in Spain, El Mundo reports in its online edition on Monday. Craioveanu ran for office as an independent candidate on the lists of the Popular Party. The group obtained 11 seats in the Getafe local council.

Craioveanu, 39, has played in Spain for 11 years, for teams such as Getafe, Villareal or Real Sociedad.

As EU citizens, some 60,000 Romanian citizens were allowed to vote in the Sunday elections - and some of them even ran for office in various polls.
