Romanian President Traian Basescu threatened the Romanian Parliament with an ultimatum - possibly June 30 - to approve a new electoral law or risk a referendum on the issue. He made the statement in an interview for The Times on Monday.

He also says he would intensify the fight against corruption and restructure the political class in Romania.

The Times believes that despite Basescu stated his will to collaborate with the Parliament following his victory in the May 19 referendum for his dismissal, new political tensions are inevitable in Romania.

However, Basescu’s spokesman Valeriu Turcan told HotNews.ro on Monday that the President did not use the word “ultimatum” in his interview for The Times.
