Romanian deputy Ioan Stan, leader of the local branch of the opposition Social Democratic Party (PSD) for the county of Dambovita, resigned as head of the branch and as PSD vice-president on Monday given the weak results the PSD reported in the May 19 referendum for the dismissal of the President.

The PSD has campaigned hard for President Basescu to be removed from office in the Saturday referendum. But the anti-presidential camp, including the PSD and the governing Liberals, managed to get only 25% of the votes in favor of their move, letting Basescu return to presidency in a major victory.

“It is a personal gesture and is not a reaction at party leadership level”, Stan said, explaining his move. He said he did not plan to leave the party.
