The Public Opinion Barometer conducted by the IMAS institute shows that little less than half of Romanians - 49% - trust the suspended president, Traian Basescu. The president is followed by George Becali - head of the New Generation Party - with 36%.

The ranking follows with Liberal-Democrat head Theodor Stolojan (31%), Social Democrat head Mircea Geoana ( 22%), Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu (19%). The last in the top are the Hungarian Minority representative Marko Bela (10%) and Conservative Party president Dan Voiculescu (9%).

32% of the respondents would vote for the Democrats, followed by the Social Democrats 17%, Liberals with 15% and the New Generation Party with 14%.

At the same time, 56% of the respondents believe that things are going the wrong way in Romanian politics and 35% say the current government is worse than before the elections in 2006.
