Former Romania president Ion Iliescu participates as co-president in the international conference “The media role in promoting tolerance and mutual understanding”, currently held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The conference is organized by the Azeri Foreign Ministry and the Islamic Conference Organization (OIC).

Iliescu held a speech about the way the “tolerance and mutual understanding will play a critical role for the society”.

Iliescu’s last term in Romania is generally remembered as the worst after 1989 in matters as the freedom of speech, freedom of press and individual right to opinion. Economic pressure, blackmail, open attacks were just a few of the weapons used by Adrian Nastase, Iliescu’s prime minister between 2000 and 2004.
