The joint boards of the two chambers of the Romanian Parliament decided on Monday to propose May 19 as the date of the referendum when Romanians are due to have their say on the suspension of President Traian Basescu. The referendum decides whether the suspended President will return to his work or is removed from office.

Interim President Nicolae Vacaroiu had previously said that the referendum would take place on May 20.

The May 19 date was decided according to the Romanian Constitution which says the 30-day deadline in this regard is set according to the date when the suspension of the President is approved by the Constitutional Court.

The referendum campaign will end 48 hours prior to the date of the referendum.
