The Romanian Intelligence Service - SRI operates outside the influence of domestic politics apparently, but it must conclude its internal reform this year as the process lasts for too long, President Traian Basescu said on Monday.
Speaking on the margins of the latest annual report on SRI activities, Basescu said the reform of Romania’s post-communist intelligence service has been continuing for 18 years already. “I ask you firmly that this year the demilitarization and de-bureaucratization of the service come to an end”, he said.
And he warned that both he and the Government have received information that would have prevented current cases where ministers are involved in criminal inquiries, had the SRI been operating efficiently.
