The population of Romania continued its downward trend in the first month of 2007 with a rate of birth below the death rate, according to new data from the National Statistics Institute. 18,795 newborns were reported in January this year, 3,500 more than the previous year (up 10.3%). But the death rate grew 14.4%, with 15.5% in the case of newborn deaths.

A boost in the numbers of marriages (6,500) was explained by the introduction of a new law that provides financial support for new families. The nuptial rate grew from 3.2 to 6.7 marriages/1,000 people in January 2007.
