Romanian Justice minister Monica Macovei warned on a TV show on Tuesday evening that the General Secretariat of the Government may be the one to blame for a strange situation where laws are being modified on their way from the Government to publication in the Official Gazette.

She said she was certain this was an old practice within the Romanian Government and ministries as apparently many laws suffered changes just prior to their publication in the Gazette - which equals their coming into force.

Macovei, who’s been under intense political pressure related to her attempts to reform the justice system, said she would leave the government should someone ask for her dismissal, but she wouldn’t leave otherwise.

On Wednesday, Government secretary general Radu Stroe said her charges were unfounded and accused her of approving legislation when and if she likes it. “I’m thinking seriously to call for her resignation”, Stroe said.
