The risk of a European safeguard clause being activated over Romania’s Justice system will still be there unless Romania accomplishes real progress in four Justice-related sectors by the time the country is to submit a report on judicial reform to the European Commission in late March, European Commissioner for Multilingualism Leonard Orban, a Romanian, has warned.

He made the statement at a conference on European elections organized by the Romanian Center for Global Studies.

“Romania must come with palpable results”, Orban said, speaking of the four key areas where intense reform was needed in the Justice sector: a law establishing ANI, an agency monitoring the wealth of elected officials; continuing fight against corruption; continuing reform of the judiciary; and improvement in the activities of various judiciary institutions.
