Bucharest dwellers should be able to cross downtown Bucharest, the historical area of the city and university campuses by bicycles rented from the municipality, according to a plan promoted by mayor Adriean Videanu. The idea was presented last week as a means to cool down incredibly intense road traffic in Central Bucharest, according to Western models.

Mayor Videanu revealed the plan on his return to Paris, a city that has been pushing bicycle rentals to encourage alternative means of transport.

He said local authorities will decide where to establish bicycle parks after a series of sociology studies and in accordance to the city capacity to introduce bicycle lanes.
