Romanian parliamentarians failed to approve president Basescu's demand for a referendum on the uninominal vote. Only 233 parliamentarians voted in favor of the referendum, out of the necessary 235.

Next week, a new text draft will be submitted to vote. The president may open the procedures for a referendum even in case the Parliament rejects the project.Only two parties declared themselves openly against the referendum - The Hungarians' Minority Democratic Party and the far right Great Romania.
