Romanian President Traian Basescu starts on Tuesday his first visit to Brussels after Romania joined the EU on January 1 this year. His agenda includes talks with European Parliament president Hans-Gert Poettering and Commission head Jose Manuel Barroso.

Basescu is expected to hold a speech before the European Parliament on Wednesday, the second day of his visit. According to the Romanian Presidency, he will present the country’s vision on the future of Europe and how Romania understands to assume a role in the project.

He will also explain the position of Romania on issues of major interest in the EU, including efforts to revive the Constitutional Treaty, the future energy policy, the reform of EU vicinity policies and migration.

Romania and Bulgaria must deliver reports on their progress after EU accession by March 31, 2007.
