Warsaw archbishop Stanislaw Wielgus did not accept his nomination as Polands' archbishop, announcing the decision one hour before the ceremony. A day before, Wielgus admitted his collaboration with the Communist regime's secret services.

The Warsaw nuncio announced on Sunday that Pope Benedict accepted Wielgus' resignation and asked Cardinal Josef Glemp, who was about to retire from leading the Polish church, to continue his work until the fate of the archdioceses is decided upon.
