Florin Ungureanu, the sub-prefect of Eastern Romanian city of Iasi, was found dead, gun by his side in an annex to his home on Tuesday. Local police told HotNews.ro that it was not yet known if he committed suicide or it was a murder, or accident.

Ungureanu, 44, father of one, had just remarried. He had just taken over part of the responsibilities of Iasi prefect Radu Prisacaru after he became the subject of an anti-corruption investigation.

A deputy for the city of Iasi told TV news station Antena 3 that Ungureanu was suspected of cancer. The sub-prefect had just undergone a surgical intervention.

Ungureanu was best placed to replace Liberal Senator Varujan Vosganian, had the latter be accepted as European Commissioner. But Vosganian had to abandon his run for the European seat this autumn as he became the target of allegations that he contributed with the communist secret police before 1989.
