The Foreign Ministry will introduce the “temporary passport” for Romanian residents in the European Union who demand it. The document would be released for those who lost their ID card or their passports and do not wish to return to Romania for a new set.

“Starting on January 1st, 2007, Romanian citizens will be able to travel in the European Union’s countries using their passport or ID card”, said the general manager for consular affairs in the Foreign Ministry, Petre Catrinciuc.

“Our advice is to keep the two ID documents separate, but in case a Romanian worker in Spain or Italy loses his documents, he will be able to demand a temporary passport at the nearest consulate, instead of returning to Romania”, said Catrinciuc.

The temporary passport is valid for one year.
