One in four European in average knows that Romania and Bulgaria will become member of the European Union on January 1 next year, according to the latest Eurobarometer published by the European Commission, quoted by Bulgarian news website Novinite.

The poll also shows only one in five Europeans and one in ten Britons know that the EU now numbers 25 member states.

Considering the answers from the 1,000 respondents from each European country included in the poll, 52% of European citizens believe the Union has less than 25 member states, only 5% believe the number is bigger and 20% have no opinion about it.

More than 50% of respondents provided a correct answer only in three countries: Cyprus (58%), Slovenia (51%) and Luxembourg (50%).

10% of the total number of respondents believed one of the countries due to join the EU next year was Poland and 9% named Hungary.
