Romania’s youngest Prosecutor General ever, Laura Codruta Kovesi, took over her new prerogatives officially on Thursday.

In her opening speech, she said she was determined to change the image of the Public Ministry and announced a series of evaluations to form the basif for future personnel and structural changes within the institution.

Kovesi, 33, ran a local branch of the anti-terrorism, anti-organized crime prosecutor’s office (DIICOT) starting January 2006. She is now replacing Ilie Botos, who resigned over a recent scandal sparked by the disappearance of a Syrian-Romanian businessman, Omar Hayssam, who’d been facing terrorism charges.

She said today that some of her priorities were improving the efficiency of prosecutors and making them focus on specific fields of activities.
