Romanian President Traian Basescu said on Wednesday that no party from outside the governing coalition could hope to have a nominee for the seat Romania is due to receive in the European Commission, after the country joins the EU next year.

He said the nomination will come from one of the two senior parties of the coalition, the Liberals and Democrats. Two minor groups - the Conservative Party and the Hungarian Democrats - are also part of the governing alliance.

Basescu’s comments come as the media has speculated that the future Romanian commissioner in Brussels may be Petre Roman and Vasile Puscas, who represent the opposition.
