Romanian prime minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu assured the European Health commissioner on Friday that Romanian authorities would meet their promises about the establishment of sanitary-veterinary controls at border points in due time before the country joins the EU, most probably on January 1 next year.

Tariceanu said during talks with Commissioner Markos Kyprianou in Bucharest today that Romania has taken measures to fight the bird flu virus ant that these measures were aimed both at sanitary-veterinary activities and the protection of the population.

For his part, Kypriuanou said the EC salutes the measures taken by Romanian authorities to prevent the expansion of the bird flu virus that has hit Romania for the past 9 months.
