The number of registered unemployed Romanians stood at 481,000 people by end of May 2006, 14,700 less than the same period last year, according to the National Statistics Institute in Bucharest. In April 2006, their number exceeded 517,300, up 6000 compared to April 2005.

Thus, the unemployment rate stood at 5.5% at end of May 2006, down 0.1% compared to May 2005 and 0.4% compared to April this year.

The highest unemployment rates are reported in the counties of Vaslui (10%), Mehedinti (9.8%) and Gorj (9.7%). The lowest rates are reported in the counties of Timis (2.2%), Ilfov (2.3%) and the city of Bucharest (2.7%).
