President Traian Basescu remains the most trusted Romanian politician according to a new poll published on Sunday.

Some 53% of Romanians trust Basescu, who in the current government camp is followed by Liberal politicians Mona Musca (44%) and Theodor Stolojan (39%), Democratic Party leader Emil Boc (26%), Liberal PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu (20%), Bucharest mayor Adriean Videanu, Conservative Party leader Dan Voiculescu and Hungarian Democrats leader Marko Bela.

Among the opposition figures, populist businessman-politician Gigi Becali, the owner of football club Steaua, is trusted most with 33%, followed by far-right leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor (24%), Social-Democrat leader Mircea Geoana (21%) and ex-President Ion Iliescu (19%).

Interior minister Vasile Blaga, Foreign minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu and Justice minister Monica Macovei are the most trusted members of the Government.

In the framework of increasing tensions between President Basescu and PM Tariceanu, 47% of the respondents say Traian Basescu is right to scold the head of Government repeatedly for his deeds, while only 10% take Tariceanu’s sides. 44% believe none of the two is right.

If elections took place on Sunday, 48% of Romanians would vote for the D.A. Alliance that now forms the government, 20% for the Social Democratic Party, 15% with the far-right Greater Romania Party, 6% with Becali’s New Generation Party and 5% with the Hungarian Democrats.
