The opposition Social Democratic and Greater Romania parties’ senators refused to vote on the privatization law of the Romanian Commercial Bank (BCR) and left the room, thus protesting against the stealthy vote of the governing senators in the Judicial Commission on Wednesday.

The draft law regarding the BCR privatization was among the priority topics on the agenda. The social democrats refused to vote the law, invoking a clause about the sale of the BCR, which should not be mentioned in the law.

The opposition requested the law be sent back to the commissions for further debate and amendments. So did the PSD senator Nicolae Vacaroiu, speaker of the Senate.

The draft law is to be debated upon within the commissions in the coming week. In August, the document is to be voted upon in the Senate, and in the Parliament in September, provided it is endorsed by the senators.
