Torrential rain, hail storms and strong winds struck several regions in Northern Romania over the weekend, with the counties of Maramures and Harghita affected the most. A person has gone missing and another was seriously hurt as some 70 households were damaged by water in Maramures.

20 other households suffered damaged in Harghita, where dozens of settlements were left without electricity.

The storms hit rural tourism wonders Poienile Izei, Rozavlea, Sieu, Glod, Slatioara and Botiza in the region of Maramures.

Electrical maintenance teams worked throughout the weekend to bring electricity back to the affected towns in Harghita.

The Environment Ministry in Bucharest announced on Sunday that high river flows were expected in many regions across the country in the coming days. The counties of Satu Mare, Maramures, Salaj, Cluj, Bistrita Nasaud, Neamt, Suceava and Botosani, all in Central and Northern Romania, are most at risk.
