The Romanian government will use a budget rectification next week to provide 300 million euro for investments in the education sector, following talks with education trade unions on Wednesday.

The Government representatives promised to deliver a strategy to increase salaries in the field, as teachers have accused the government of not standing up to the promises it made following a weeks-long strike last autumn.

PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu said today one of his government’s priorities is the modernization of the education sector and challenged the accusations that it did not respect its promises.

But trade unionists said they would not believe the new promises and warned that unless their claims are met they would block the start of the 2006-2007 academic year.
