Romanian GDP exceeded 61 billion lei in the first four months of 2006, up 6.9% compared to the same period last year, according to data the National Statistics Institute - INS published on Thursday. The growth comes on the back of growth in the industry, construction works and services sectors, which had a contribution to the GDP of 84.2%.

According to the INS, industry activities grew 4.8%, construction works – 20.4% and services – 6.8%. Agriculture had a lower contribution, of 2.7% of the GDP.

Meanwhile, a 20.4% growth of retail sales has led to a 10.9% higher individual consumption among Romanian households in Q1 this year, compared to the same period in 2005.

And the current account deficit grew on the back of higher imports of goods and services (+18.7%) against exports of goods and services (+13.0%), which had a negative impact on the dynamics of the GDP.
