A road passage aimed at improving traffic between Bucharest and its northern Otopeni Airport was inaugurated Monday night after two years of works. The opening was attended by Transport minister Gheorghe Dobre and PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu.

The 330-meter bridge has costed 6.7 million euro.

The inauguration comes after resistance tests over the weekend.

Minister Dobre announced that ongoing works for the extention of the National Road 1 linking Bucharest with Ploiesti in the north, from four to six lanes in the Otopeni sector will conclude on August 1. Similar works between Otopeni and Bucharest will conclude by September 1, according to the same minister.

The lack of a highway linking Bucharest with cities in the north has turned traffic congestion in the Otopeni area into a daily occurance, prompting criticism that tourists and other travellers lose their flights regularly on departure from Bucharest.
