The European Commission has said it had no information that Hungary or Slovakia would be involved in the appearance of bird flu hotbeds across Romania recently, as a controversial report by the Romanian Intelligence Service insinuated this week.

EC spokesman Philip Tod said, however, that authorities in Brussels were worried about the expansion of the crisis and would provide further assistance to Romania to deal with the situation.

He said a ban on EU poultry imports from Romania has extended to another five counties, upping the total number of affected counties to 31.

And he said the Commission was in constant touch with Romanian authorities about the crisis.
