The annual rate of inflation for the period of January – April was of 6.9%, National Bank (BNR) governor Mugur Isarescu announced on Tuesday. It was the lowest level of inflation since 1990 and has Isarescu hope the inflation target for 2006 should stay at about 5%.

According to Isarescu, the inflation rate for the period is 1.7% lower than in December 2005. The trend is most visible among managed prises, which in April were 5% lower than in December last year.

The trend is encouraged by restrictive monetary circumstances, the rise of RON against the European single currency, changes of the demand-offer balance on the market of products with volatile prices and others.
