Should Romania join the European Union on January 1, 2007, authorities in Bucharest will have to spend 9 million euro from EU funds daily for a period of two years, the head of the European Commission Delegation here, Jonathan Scheele, said on Thursday. Romania will receive 28 million euro following the accession and will have to spend the money by 2015.

According to Romanian Integration minister Anca Boagiu, the responsibility to spend the money will fall on the shoulders of local authorities and the civil society, if the Romanian government manages to create a friendlier legislative environment.

She said the most important task is to forward good, responsible projects to use the EU funds, which will also need the financial participation of Romanian banks.
