The first online database of media companies in Romania will be available starting Wednesday, March 3 and promises to clear up a lot of dubious issues about who owns what in the Romanian press. The portal, called Media Index, is launched by a Romanian NGO, the Center for Independent Journalism with the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day.

The portal was created with US Embassy and Romanian Justice Ministry funding in a concerted effort by CIJ and other organizations such as the Romanian Center for Investigative Journalism, The Media Monitoring Agency and the Online Press Editors Association, the publisher of Hotnews.ro.

The project aims at answering an increasing concern in Romania about the transparency of media ownership and its impact on editorial independence.

The portal is available at www.mediaindex.ro.
