A Romanian-Syrian businessman suspected of involvement in the kidnapping of three Romanian journalists in Iraq last year was freed from arrest on Wednesday. According to press agency report, the preventive arrest measure was replaced with a ban on leaving Romania.

The order comes as Omar Hayssam is suffering from colon cancer and underwent a surgical intervention in January this year. He was repeatedly hospitalized in relation to his condition.

Defense attorneys have repeatedly asked for Hayssam to be freed so that he spend his last months with his family and be taken care in a specialized clinic.

He was put under criminal inquiry in relation to a scheme that allegedly led to the kidnapping of three Romanian journalists by Iraqi insurgents last year.
