The Romanian Government approved on Wednesday a draft law on the funding of political parties, which will compel them to present a complete list of funding sources, reduce the maximum level of donations from party members and establish a single authority to check funding operations instead of the current four.

Justice minister Monica Macovei said in a press conference today that the new legislation is aimed at bringing more transparency to funding surces on the political stage and at improving control on such operations. She explained political parties would have to publish their revenues from member contributions and other sources.

Additionally, parties that have not received donations must announce it in the Official Gazette.

Minister Macovei also announced that the level of political party funding from the state budget would depend from results in local elections in addition to those from general elections.
