The Romanian Academy is celebrating its 140th anniversary with a series of events that continued with a solemn session attended by President Traian Basescu on Tuesday. The Academy is due to elect a new head in a vote on Wednesday in which five Academy members will try to replace Eugen Simion, who’s been running the institution for eight years.

The events these days are attended by most presidents of European academies.

The history of the institution established in 1866 is presented in a book written and due to be presented by Dan Berindei, titled "The History of the Romanian Academy 1866-2006".
