The leadership of the Romanian opposition Social-Democratic Party (PSD) decided after five hours of talks on Monday to call a National PSD Council to discuss the problems confronting the group in May this year, after the EU presents its report on Romanian progress towards European accession.

A decision to organize an extraordinary congress of the PSD is yet to be decided as many call for one to tackle issues such as the continuously falling public support for the PSD, the corruption charges against many of its leaders and the lack of unity within its leadership to provide a solid opposition to the current government.

Party leaders have expressed support for such a congress, but the idea is opposed by the leaders of several regional branches of the group.
