Romanian President Traian Basescu held talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the spring European Council in Brussels on Friday.

The talks focused on the EU enlargement process and Romania’s preparations to join the Union on January 1 next year.

The Romanian head of state pleaded for a European Council decision on Romania’s accession at the EU summit in June this year, following European Commission recommendations in this regard, to be included in a report due in May.

Basescu argued such a decision would allow Romania to better prepare for accession by strengthening its capacities in managing incoming EU funds.

For her part, Merkel showed Germany is following the progress in Romania closely and stressed the EC report in May is a most important step before the ratification of the Accession Treaty.
