The Romanian National Bank (BNR) set a current account deficit figure of 391 million Euros, up 70 percent more in January 2006 compared to the same period last year. According to BNR, the deficit in 2005 increased 35.2 percent to 6.891 million Euros.

Last year, the current account deficit was 6.8 billion Euros, up 34.1 percent compared to 2004.

Commercial trade recorded a negative sold of 438 million euros while incomes recorded a deficit of 204 million de Euros, 11 million less than in January 2005.

The external debt topped 24 000 mln Euros in January this year, down 0.7 percent compared to December 31, 2005.

The economic growth slowed down, inflation maintained at high level 8.6 percent in 2005 compared to the target inflation of 7.5, the account deficit increased and external competitiveness diminished.
