The leader of the main opposition group said in Romania, the Social Democratic Party (PSD), has said it was going through a difficult period and called for a calm reaction within the party to the announced exodus of members.

PSD president Mircea Geoana said however that there is no known number of members willing to leave the party in what he ses to be "a marginal and limited phenomenon".

Geoana said he would call for the organization of a National Council of the PSD to discuss the current situation, in which a large group of PSD members are reportedly ready to follow their former leader Adrian Nastase, who is considering to leave the Social Democrats.
