Hungary’s national day was celebrated peacefully on March 15 across Romania where Hungarian population lives. 10,000 ethnic Hungarians gathered in the city of Targu Secuiesc and read out a declaration of autonomy of the Szekler County.

Fears of incidents prompted authorities to issue warnings and deploy police force.. The Romanian Magyar Union leader Marko Bella said all Romanians working in the local public administration in the counties of Harghita and Covasna should learn Hungarian, as they are paid from the taxes collected in the Szekler County.

In the city of Cluj Napoca, students Babes-Bolyai University booed the representative of the Hungary’s General Consulate while addressing a ceremonial message.
