The Romanian city of Cernavoda, home of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, was put on quarantine on Sunday due to an outbreak of bird flu, agecies report. Some 20,000 people live in the city, many of them foreigners working for the nuclear plant.

It is the first Romanian city to be placed under full quarantine due to the bird flu cases and is expected to stay closed until all its 13,500 fowl are slaughtered.

According to officials in Bucharest, people are allowed to enter the city, especially those who have to go to work there, but they cannot leave until the situation is under control.

Agriculture minister Gheorghe Flutur has called for the support of other ministries in its efforts to contain the bird flu outbreak in Romania.
