Romanian President Traian Basescu reacted on Thursday to the accusations brought against him by over 1,000 Romanian judges, who claimed he exceeded his duties when he accused the Justice system of corruption.

Basescu said "a high level of corruption still exist" within the system and that "I did not run for Presidency to sleep at the Cotroceni Palace [the presidency headquarters in Bucharest] and i’m pretty much aware about the judicial system that’s been running since 1990. I respect the independence of Justice and that is why I expect it to work. I represent the average Romanian so my opinion matters", he said.

He made the statement during a session of the Supreme Council of Magistrates in which a complaint by hundreds of judges is being discussed. The complaint calls for the Council to take the President to the Constitutional Court over similar statements made last month, which the judges consider an interference with the Justice system.
