The trade deficit of Romania rose to 637.7 million euro in January 2006, up 66% compared to the same month in 2005, according to data published by the National Statistics Institute on Thursday.

The value of exports rose by 16.9% than in January 2005, while imports rose by 26.9%.

Exports reached 1.769 billion euro in the first month of 2006, while imports rose to 2.407 billion euro. Exports to EU countries rose by 11.1% compared to the same month last year, accounting for 69.9% of the total amount of exports.

Meanwhile, imports from the EU-25 rose by 22.9%, accounting for 60.5% of the total amount.
