Investigations by Romanian authorities into the alleged existence of secret CIA detention centres in the country have led to no such discovery, the Foreign Ministry (MAE) in Bucharest says in a letter to the secretary general of the Council of Europe.

MAE says in a press release the response to the CE official has been elaborated after consultations with all due institutions. The letter presents the judicial framework and the provisions of international treaties that guarantee the prevention of possible secret detention acts on Romanian territory.

It also includes relevant provisions from the criminal legislation on illegally retaining people in the country.

It also mentions conclusions from domestic investigations that have confirmed such detention centers have not existed on the Romanian territory and that no Romanian officials has been involved in the illegal detention of people.

All domestic and international investigations on allegations by a human rights group and Western media in this regard failed to confirm these allegations against Romania, MAE says.
