Bucharest will have an alternative belt highway in three years time, Transports minister Ludovic Orban said on Thursday. The government approved the construction project, which needs investments of over 1.07 million euro. Ludovic Orban said that this project will not be funded by the state but will be built through a concession contract.
Orban argued that the decision was taken to move the transit traffic outside Bucharest in order to improve currently hellish traffic conditions within the city. According to the project, the northern part of the belt will link the A1 and A2 highways to Pitesti and Constanta respectively and will be 53 km long.
Orban said that a draft law would be proposed to set up a Metropolitan Transportation Authority with the main goals of assuring the planification, coordination and maintenance of common transportation facilities in Bucharest.
